AAEA Artists-in-Residence Program at the Kentucky
Horse Park
T
he Academy has established an Artist-in-Residence Program
at the Kentucky Horse Park, which allows park guests to visit with a working equine artist
and observe their creative process. For further information about how to apply for the AIR Program, call
the Academy office at 859-281-6031.
Workshops
In
1992, the American Academy of Equine Art, Inc. realized its
original goal of becoming a teaching organization. Academy
workshops are open to anyone interested in equine art, whether
beginners or more experienced artists who wish to sharpen
their skills. Instruction is offered in drawing, painting
and sculpting. Our workshops fill a void that is not addressed
by existing art schools today. They provide the opportunity
for students to exchange ideas with a group of artists who
share similar creative goals. Academy instructors are nationally renowned professionals selected for their merit as equine artists or their outstanding reputation in related genres.
Unless otherwise stated, workshops are held at the Kentucky Horse Park which is one of the most complete equine facilities in the world, with over 1,200 acres dedicated to the horse and to mankind's long-standing equine relationship.
It is home to outstanding examples of more than 50 breeds
of horses, and hosts some of the world’s finest equestrian
events. The park provides an ideal setting for students to
observe equine nature and work firsthand from live models.
Located within the park, the International
Museum of the Horse presents dynamic exhibitions on all
facets of the world of horses. On the museum’s lower
level, the William G. Kenton Gallery features changing exhibitions
of equine art.

Class time 9:00 - 5:00 - Cost $450
Skill Level: All Levels
Location: Columbia, Missouri
This workshop will guide students in building a small equine figure through a systematic approach based on anatomical principles. Informal talks on anatomy will offer an understanding of basic skeletal and muscular structure as it relates to form and movement. The class will progress from the building of an appropriate armature to the development of a complete sculpture in clay with students receiving individual attention.
Kathleen Friedenberg began her professional career as a veterinarian in England. A Thouron Fellowhsip brought her to the University of Pennsylvania to study human and equine orthopedics. She spent ten years as a freelance medical illustrator, during which time she began to study sculpture. Her reputation as an equine sculptor is particularly strong in regard to correct anatomy, lively action and, often, humor. She is a Full Member of the AAEA and holds memberships in the Society of Animal Artists, the National Sculpture Society and the American Artists Professional League. Her work has won numerous awards at national exhibitions, including Knickerbocker Artists and Allied Artists of America.

Class time 9:00 - 5:00 - Cost $450
Skill Level: Beginning through Intermediate
Location: Kentucky Horse Park
Color will be the focus of Carol's workshop. Drawing and composition will be discussed, as their importance is the foundation for all great works of art.

We will work from special still-life forms and, at the end of the week, from live equine models, with individual instruction each day, as well as group direction and discussions.
Carol Peek knew at an early age that she would become an artist. She pursued her education at UC Santa Barbara, UC Berkeley, and graduated with honors from the Art Center College of Design in Passadena, California.
Throughout her career, she has painted and owned horses, many of them the subjects of her paintings. Whatever the subject, light and color have always been the driving inspiration behind her work.
Carol's work is in collections around the world, and she is widely represented in galleries and major publications.

DAWN EMERSON
Pastel Workshop
"Moving the Horse with Pastel"
June 2 - 6th, 2008
Class time 9:00 - 5:00 - Cost $450
Skill Level: All Levels
Location: Kentucky Horse Park
This class will focus on the horse in motion, rather than the horse at rest. Students will be encouraged to push themselves by generating many thumbnail sketches, and to experiment with various surfaces, using the soft pastel medium.
The horse is one of Dawn Emerson’s main inspirations for depicting movement and emotional energy. She is known for her bold designs, and use of calligraphic marks and color, that push the boundaries of the pastel medium.
Dawn has won many awards for her paintings of horses, animals and people, and is a signature member of the Pastel Society of America and the Pastel Society of the West Coast.
Dawn has boundless energy for teaching, and seeks, in her workshops, to create an organized and supportive atmosphere, where risk-taking and sharing happen naturally.

Class time 9:00 - 5:00 - Cost $180

She has won numerous awards at national exhibitions. Her sculptures are notable for their portrayal of the equine form in action. Sculpting the Human Figure – A Class for Equine Sculptors
In this fast-paced five day class, equine sculptors will be challenged to sculpt the human figure – especially in the various ways the rider interacts with the horse. Class elements include:
- Building an armature and sculpting a seated figure using a live model.
- Sculpting faces and capturing a portrait likeness

- Clothing the nude figure, with an emphasis on fabric textures, folds, creases, and drapery.

A Houston Texas native and lifelong student of art, Ken Sullivan earned his degree in Economics at Texas A&M University in 1986. He continued to study art on his own during a fifteen-year career in the oil business and taught himself to sculpt, intuitively developing his clean, powerful style.
Ken combines universal themes with his passion for anatomy, accuracy, action and attention to detail. The result is a fresh approach to classical realism that celebrates the beauty of the human and equine form. His powerful and distinctive equine figures in particular have captured the attention of critics and collectors alike.
Ken is a Full Member of the American Academy of Equine Art and an Associate Member of the Society of Animal Artists. He's also a member of the American Plains Artists and a colleague member of the National Sculpture Society.
