About Artist Mary Sand
At the early age of 4, Mary began her life-long passion for horses, jumping at any opportunity to ride or be near them. Her youth was spent in Europe where she learned to ride and where she developed an appreciation for art, having been greatly influenced by the larger than life equestrian statues positioned in city centers. It was much later in life, during a trip to Verden, in the lower saxony region of Germany, that her childhood memories of the equestrian statues was brought to the forefront of her mind and the idea of becoming a sculptor emerged.
Through sculpture workshops at the American Academy of Equine Art, Mary studied with equine sculptors Gwen Reardon and Kathleen Friedenberg and in 2007 came full circle, becoming one of three finalists with her former instructors for a life-size statue for the United States Dressage Federation.
Her sculptures have received numerous awards and have been featured on the cover of The Chronicle of the Horse magazine several times. Mary has been represented by galleries including the prestigious Cross Gate Gallery for the MFHA Traveling Art Exhibition, the National Sculpture Society in New York City, and the American Academy of Equine Art. Her limited edition sculptures are in private collections throughout the United States, Canada, Europe and she is commissioned to create bronze portrait sculptures and perpetual trophies.
Mary lives and works in beautiful Bucks County Pennsylvania on her small farm with her two horses Ami, Machu Picchu and a very mischievous pony called Lightning.

Workshops
In
1992, the American Academy of Equine Art, Inc. realized its
original goal of becoming a teaching organization. Academy
workshops are open to anyone interested in equine art, whether
beginners or more experienced artists who wish to sharpen
their skills. Instruction is offered in drawing, painting
and sculpting. Our workshops fill a void that is not addressed
by existing art schools today. They provide the opportunity
for students to exchange ideas with a group of artists who
share similar creative goals. Academy instructors are nationally renowned professionals selected for their merit as equine artists or their outstanding reputation in related genres.
Unless otherwise stated, workshops are held at the Kentucky Horse Park which is one of the most complete equine facilities in the world, with over 1,200 acres dedicated to the horse and to mankind's long-standing equine relationship.
It is home to outstanding examples of more than 50 breeds
of horses, and hosts some of the world’s finest equestrian
events. The park provides an ideal setting for students to
observe equine nature and work firsthand from live models.
Located within the park, the International
Museum of the Horse presents dynamic exhibitions on all
facets of the world of horses. On the museum’s lower
level, the William G. Kenton Gallery features changing exhibitions
of equine art.

Sculpture Workshop
"Creative and Expressive Horse Sculpture"
May 10 - 14, 2010
Class time 9:30 - 4:30
Skill Level: All
Location: Kentucky Horse Park
This workshop will focus on learning to see and learning various ways of seeing. This will be a key to understanding how to ‘read’ photographs and translate the images into an expressive sculpture. Kentucky Horse Park has many horses to observe and offers a wonderful opportunity to work from live models as well as photography. We will begin with a series of fun exercises and then move onto the construction of an armature. Using oil-based clay, students will create a sculpture in a pose of their choice. Students will be guided in many sculpture techniques, approaches and processes. During this workshop there will be a series of discussions on anatomy, proportions, composition and creative narrative in sculpture.
Joanne Sullivan-Gessler hails all the way from New Zealand; Joanne has been a full time professional sculptor for well over 20 years and is published in numerous magazines and publications. With a string of prestigious commissions to her name, Joanne’s works can be found in private collections in USA, Great Britain, France, Germany, Australia, South Africa and New Zealand as well as public sculptures in New Zealand and Finland. Joanne began sculpture privately under noted sculptor Etienne de Kock in South Africa. As an established sculptor in South Africa, she relocated to the USA in 1998 and participated in workshops both at the AAEA and Scottsdale Artist’s School in Arizona. Joanne has recently unveiled a full life sized bronze of the Legendary race horse Phar Lap, in his birthplace of Timaru in New Zealand.

Painting Workshop
"Direct Oil Painting, Alla Prima From Photos"
June 3 – 4, 2010
Class time 9:30 - 4:30
Skill Level: : Intermediate to Advanced
Location: Kentucky Horse Park
During this 2-day workshop, students will explore the power and pleasure of direct oil painting in the rapid, alla prima style, in oils. Using photos taken during Stephen Hockensmith's "How to Photograph Horses" workshop earlier in the week, Lesley will be providing students with tips on how to select & utilize their own photographs for great paintings, as well as demonstrating the gestural drawing methods and oil techniques she uses, whether painting from life, photos, or sketches. In a warm, friendly, yet energetic environment, students are encouraged to be bold, and discover a variety of tools and techniques to create vibrant, fresh paintings whilst learning to edit and 'see' like an "alla prima" painter. This workshop is open to intermediate+ painters who are already competent and fairly confident with oils.
Lesley Humphrey is a full member of the AAEA. She is the daughter of an artist and has spent a lifetime working and studying in five countries with some of the world’s foremost artists. She teaches a full schedule of workshops in Britain and the U.S.

Class time 9:30 - 4:30

Using their own ideas and references, as well as those gathered from life in the beautiful Kentucky Horse Park, students will embark upon three days of exploration and discovery using water media in a variety of ways. (Students are encouraged to bring the water media of their choice. Lesley's methods are identical, whether painting with acrylics, or watercolor and gouache. ) This workshop is not suitable for beginners who have never used water media previously.

This class will guide the student through the sculpture process from the construction of an armature to a finished clay figure. Through lectures and demonstrations, the student will be provided with information on all phases of the process with an emphasis on sculptural composition, correct anatomy, and movement. Drawing Workshop
"Drawing as a Foundation"
July 12 - 16, 2010
Class time -
Skill Level: All Levels
Location: Lexington, KY
Drawing is both a foundation for painting and a complete art form in itself. This class will encourage the student’s growth through instruction that focuses on a traditional representational treatment of the horse. Emphasis will be on the anatomy and the fundamentals of creating a balanced composition using volume and values. This will be accomplished by concentrating on the students skills of observation for both their subjects and their own artistic progress. This course explores drawing as an end in its own right and as a foundation for better paintings. We’ll be working both in the classroom and outside using some of the Park’s beautiful horses as subjects.
Liz Scott has been drawing and painting animals since her childhood. She earned a BA degree in Studio Arts from Principia College in Elsah, IL. She is a full member of the AAEA and has shown with prominent equine, wildlife, and western artists. Her work has been featured in Western Horseman, Horse & Horseman, Wildlife Art, and Southwest Art.

Equine Anatomy Workshop
"Equine Anatomy for the Artist"
August 21 – 22, 2009
Class time 9:00 - 5:00 - Cost $180
Skill Level: All
Location: Kentucky Horse Park
This class is for painters, sculptors or any artist who wants a better understanding of how a horse is put together. Every equine artist should have a good working knowledge of what makes the horse tick. This two-day workshop is designed to give the student a solid knowledge of how the horse is put together and how it moves. Starting with the skeletal structure we will move outward to the muscles, skin and even hair. Working with handouts, an equine skeleton and live models, we will study how the bones and muscles work and how movement effects their appearance. There will also be some drawing exercises and some basic equine measurements.
This is an anatomy class for artists, not a medical anatomy class, so don't worry, you will not have to memorize all the Latin names.
